Description
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has launched a significant conservation initiative at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Konark Sun Temple. The project focuses on the careful removal of sand from the Jagamohan, the temple’s assembly hall, which was filled more than a century ago. This effort aims to restore the structural integrity of the monument while ensuring its long-term stability.
Why Was the Jagamohan Filled with Sand?
Between 1901 and 1903, British engineers filled the Jagamohan with sand as a precautionary measure to prevent the structure from collapsing. At the time, it was considered a practical solution for stabilizing the temple.
However, this intervention led to long-term limitations:
The Jagamohan was sealed off and remained inaccessible for decades.
Internal architectural features could not be studied in detail.
Conservation efforts were restricted mainly to the exterior of the temple.
With advancements in modern conservation techniques, experts are now able to carefully reverse this historic intervention.
Current Restoration Work by ASI
The ASI is carrying out the restoration with extreme caution, using scientific methods to avoid any damage to the structure.
Key steps include:
Creating a controlled 6×5-foot passage through the western wall.
Using diamond drilling technology to minimize vibrations and structural stress.
Gradual manual removal of sand after the drilling process is completed.
Continuous monitoring of the monument’s stability throughout the work.
Officials estimate that this phase of the project may take up to a year due to the delicate nature of the structure.
Scientific Assessment Before the Work
Before beginning excavation, ASI conducted detailed studies:
Two test holes were drilled in December for preliminary analysis.
Samples of stone and sand were examined by IIT Madras.
The sand was found to be stable, confirming feasibility for safe removal.
Based on these findings, senior authorities approved the restoration work.
Historical Importance of Konark Sun Temple
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Konark Sun Temple is designed in the form of a colossal chariot dedicated to the Sun God.
Key highlights include:
Construction spanning approximately 12 years.
Involvement of nearly 1,200 artisans and sculptors.
Renowned for its exquisite stone carvings and exceptional architectural design.
This ongoing conservation effort marks one of the most important heritage restoration projects in recent years, aimed at preserving the legacy of this iconic monument.
