Uttar Pradesh has established India’s first integrated recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries and rare earth magnets at the UPSIDC Industrial Area in Sikandrabad. Developed by Rocklink India, this facility marks an important milestone in enhancing domestic recovery of critical minerals and supporting the country’s transition toward clean energy.

Integrated Recycling for Critical Materials

The plant is built to recycle lithium-ion batteries, rare earth magnets, and metal-containing industrial waste. Its primary objective is to create circular supply chains for key materials widely used in electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Processing Capacity and Rare Earth Recovery

Initially, the facility will recycle up to 10,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries annually. It is also capable of processing 60 tonnes of rare earth magnets each month. Additionally, a rare-earth chloride processing unit with an annual capacity of 1,500 tonnes is scheduled to begin operations in 2026.

Advanced Recovery and EPR Compliance

The facility is registered under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines and is capable of handling 95 different types of battery scrap, including both pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. Its in-house R2 recycling technology enables recovery rates exceeding 98 percent for valuable metals such as aluminium, copper, and iron, while ensuring safe control of hazardous emissions.

The plant will also support battery refurbishment, allowing usable cells to be tested and reused, thereby extending battery life and minimizing waste. Specialized systems have been installed to recycle rare earth magnets such as NdFeB, SmCo, and AlNiCo, improving traceability of materials. Overall, this project strengthens India’s efforts to reduce reliance on imports and develop a sustainable ecosystem for critical minerals.
