Description
A significant update in the Indian school curriculum has been introduced with the release of “Ganita Manjari,” the new Class 9 mathematics textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training for the 2026–27 academic session. The book replaces traditional formula-based learning with a story-driven and concept-based approach rooted in the Indian Knowledge System (IKS).
The textbook aims to strengthen cultural understanding in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by highlighting India’s historical contributions to mathematics. It presents mathematics not just as a set of rules, but as an evolving discipline shaped by centuries of Indian intellectual tradition.
Historical and Conceptual Integration
The book connects several modern mathematical concepts with their historical Indian origins:
Coordinate Geometry
It suggests that early forms of spatial and grid-based thinking were evident in urban planning during the Sindhu-Sarasvati Civilization. It also references Baudhayana’s early formulation of the Pythagorean theorem.
Concept of Zero
The textbook highlights the contributions of Brahmagupta, who described rules for zero and negative numbers, treating Shunya as a meaningful mathematical entity.
Decimal Number System
It links the development of the place-value system to ancient Indian texts, including references to the Rigvedic tradition and the works of Aryabhata.
Early Ideas of Calculus
The book acknowledges the Kerala School of Mathematics, particularly Madhava of Sangamagrama, for developing infinite series concepts that preceded modern calculus.
