INS Nireekshak Visits Sri Lanka for Joint Naval Training and Maritime Cooperation

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Nireekshak has reached Colombo port in Sri Lanka for an operational turnaround and training visit, reinforcing maritime cooperation and defence ties between India and Sri Lanka. The deployment underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, especially in naval coordination and regional maritime security.

The Sri Lankan Navy received the vessel in accordance with traditional naval customs. The visit includes a series of professional exchanges, specialised diving activities, humanitarian support initiatives, and defence cooperation programmes aimed at enhancing bilateral maritime engagement.

About INS Nireekshak

INS Nireekshak is a diving support and submarine rescue vessel of the Indian Navy. It is designed for underwater operations, salvage missions, submarine rescue assistance, and advanced naval diving tasks.

The ship, under the command of Commander Sailesh Kumar Tyagi, is currently hosting a joint training programme with Sri Lanka Navy diving personnel to improve technical skills, coordination, and operational readiness between the two forces.

4th India–Sri Lanka Joint Diving Exercise

The vessel is taking part in the 4th India–Sri Lanka Joint Diving Exercise, scheduled from April 21 to April 27. During the exercise, diving teams from both navies will engage in specialised underwater drills and collaborative training operations.

The aim is to strengthen interoperability, improve rescue and diving capabilities, and share best practices in underwater operations. These exercises play a crucial role in enhancing disaster response readiness, maritime rescue efficiency, and underwater security cooperation.

Humanitarian and Defence Cooperation

As part of India’s humanitarian outreach, INS Nireekshak will transfer two BHISM cubes to Sri Lankan authorities under the “Aarogya Maitri” initiative. These portable medical units are intended to support emergency healthcare delivery during disasters and crisis situations.

Additionally, the Indian Navy will supply 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to the Sri Lankan Navy, further boosting defence preparedness and operational cooperation between the two maritime neighbours.

Alignment with MAHASAGAR Vision

This engagement also aligns with India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision, which promotes regional stability, maritime security, and cooperative development across the Indian Ocean Region.
