Description

Scientists have identified one of the most detailed genetic records yet of a Neanderthal group dating back around 100,000 years in present-day Poland. A study published in Current Biology examined ancient mitochondrial DNA extracted from eight Neanderthal teeth discovered in Stajnia Cave, revealing rare insights into a small community that once lived in Central-Eastern Europe. The findings help shed light on family connections, movement patterns, and population history among Neanderthals across the continent.

Genetic insights from Stajnia Cave

Researchers successfully recovered mitochondrial DNA from eight teeth unearthed at Stajnia Cave, located north of the Carpathian Mountains in southern Poland. The analysis allowed them to reconstruct the genetic profiles of at least seven Neanderthals who likely lived at the site during the same period. This marks the first time a multi-individual Neanderthal genetic picture has been reconstructed from a single location and timeframe in this part of Europe, offering a clearer understanding of how small groups may have coexisted.

Signs of family connections

The study revealed that two juvenile individuals and one adult shared identical mitochondrial DNA, indicating a close maternal relationship. Since mitochondrial DNA is passed down from mothers, this suggests direct family ties within the group. Such evidence is uncommon in Neanderthal research, as most genetic data comes from isolated remains found at different sites and time periods rather than from a single community.

Wider connections across Eurasia

The mitochondrial lineage identified in the Stajnia Neanderthals matches genetic branches found in remains from the Iberian Peninsula, southeastern France, and the northern Caucasus. This indicates that a broad maternal lineage once spread across western Eurasia before later being replaced by other Neanderthal populations with distinct genetic traits. It also highlights that Central-Eastern Europe was closely linked to wider Neanderthal migration networks rather than being an isolated region.

Overall, the research suggests that Central-Eastern Europe played a significant role in Neanderthal history, likely serving as a key corridor for population movement, interaction, and cultural exchange during the Middle Paleolithic period. It also emphasizes the importance of combining archaeology, radiocarbon dating, and genetics to build a more accurate picture of early human evolution.
