Description
Former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) co-founder Nadendla Bhaskara Rao passed away in Hyderabad on April 22, 2026, at the age of 90, while undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at a private super-speciality hospital.
He remained a significant figure in Andhra Pradesh politics for several decades, despite shifting party affiliations and a history marked by major political controversies. His son, Nadendla Manohar, is currently a senior leader in the Jana Sena Party and serves as the Minister for Civil Supplies, Food and Consumer Affairs in the TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh. His last rites are scheduled for April 24, bringing to a close an important chapter in the state’s political history.
Brief but historic Chief Ministership
Bhaskara Rao is best remembered for one of the most dramatic episodes in Andhra Pradesh politics. In 1984, he served as Chief Minister for just 31 days after a political revolt within the TDP, during a period when N.T. Rama Rao (NTR) had travelled to the United States for heart surgery. Backed by a faction of TDP legislators and supported by Congress (I), he assumed office. However, his tenure was short-lived as a widespread “Save Democracy” movement demanded NTR’s reinstatement. Under mounting political and public pressure, the central leadership intervened, leading to the recall of Governor Thakur Ram Lal and the restoration of NTR as Chief Minister.
Role in the formation of TDP
Bhaskara Rao was among the co-founders of the Telugu Desam Party in 1982, alongside N.T. Rama Rao. Following the party’s victory in the 1983 Assembly elections, he served as Finance Minister in the first TDP government. Despite his early contributions to the party’s growth, he was later expelled after the 1984 political crisis and his fallout with NTR.
Long political career across parties
A native of Guntur district, Bhaskara Rao had an extensive political career spanning both state and national politics. He served as MLA from Vijayawada East, Vemuru, and Tenali constituencies. Initially elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on a Congress ticket in 1978, he later won a Lok Sabha seat from Khammam in 1998, again representing Congress. In 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
