Description

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is famously known as the “Forest of Knives.” It is located in the island country of Madagascar. Unlike ordinary forests filled with trees, this area is covered with tall, thin limestone formations that are extremely sharp and resemble knives.

Forests are among the most important natural features on Earth, covering nearly one-third of the planet’s land surface. While most forests are dense with trees, some are highly unusual and look completely different. One such extraordinary place is the “Forest of Knives,” which is not made of trees but of sharp, rocky formations that appear both beautiful and dangerous.

Why Is It Called the Forest of Knives?

The name “Forest of Knives” comes from the sharp, pointed rocks that dominate the landscape. These jagged limestone structures are so sharp that walking on them without proper protection is almost impossible.

The word “Tsingy” itself means “a place where one cannot walk barefoot.” This meaning perfectly describes how dangerous yet fascinating this rocky terrain is.

How Was This Stone Forest Formed?

Millions of years ago, this region was submerged under the sea. Over time, shells and coral accumulated on the ocean floor and formed thick layers. Gradually, these layers hardened and transformed into limestone.

Later, movements within the Earth caused the land to rise above sea level. Rainwater then played a major role in shaping the landscape. It slowly dissolved the softer parts of the limestone while leaving behind harder sections. This natural process, known as karst erosion, continued for millions of years and created the sharp, knife-like rock formations seen today.

Unique Plants and Animals

Although the landscape appears harsh and dangerous, it supports a surprising variety of life. Many rare plants and animals thrive in this environment, and several species found here exist nowhere else in the world.

Animals such as lemurs, birds, and reptiles have adapted to survive among the sharp rocks. For example, sifaka lemurs are able to leap gracefully from one rock to another without injury. Plants also grow at different heights depending on the availability of sunlight and moisture.

Interesting Facts About the Forest of Knives

This remarkable place holds many fascinating features. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 due to its exceptional natural value.

More than 85% of the species found here are endemic, meaning they are not found anywhere else on Earth. The region also contains numerous hidden caves and underground rivers beneath the rocky surface.

In the past, local communities used these caves for shelter and burial practices. Because of the extremely sharp and difficult terrain, the area remained isolated for many years, making it hard for outsiders to access.
