Description

The National Testing Agency has released a detailed data analysis for JEE Main Session 2 2026 through its official X (Twitter) handle. The report includes insights on the relationship between percentile scores and raw marks in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main).

According to the data shared, the marks required to achieve the 99th percentile varied significantly across shifts. The range was between 165 marks in the most difficult shift and 196 marks in the easiest shift, showing a difference of 31 marks out of 300.

For the 98th percentile, the variation was around 27 marks, while for the 97th percentile it was approximately 26 marks. The agency also noted that only two shifts recorded a perfect score of 300. In one of the shifts, 285 marks were enough to reach the 100th percentile, as it was the highest score achieved in that session.

Variation Across Shifts is Normal

The National Testing Agency explained that such differences are expected in large-scale examinations conducted over multiple shifts and days. Even after applying moderation techniques, it is not possible to ensure identical difficulty levels in every question paper.

Percentile-Based Evaluation System

The agency clarified that percentile scores are calculated based on a candidate’s relative performance within their respective shift. A percentile indicates the percentage of candidates a student has scored higher than in the same session, ensuring fair comparison within each shift.

Normalisation for Final Ranking

Since raw marks alone cannot ensure fairness across different shifts, the National Testing Agency uses a normalisation process. This method converts raw scores into percentile scores for each shift and then combines them to prepare the final merit list.

Through this system, candidates with similar percentiles are treated equally, even if they appeared in different shifts with varying difficulty levels.
