Description
Venezuela became the first country in modern times to lose all of its glaciers, marking a major warning sign of accelerating climate change.
The country’s last remaining glacier, the Humboldt Glacier (on Pico Bolívar in the Andes), had been shrinking for decades. By 2024, it had reduced so much that scientists reclassified it as a small ice field rather than a true glacier, meaning it no longer met the criteria of a moving mass of ice.
What happened?
Venezuela once had around six glaciers in the early 20th century.
By the 1970s, most had already disappeared due to warming temperatures.
The Humboldt Glacier survived as the last one until recent years.
In 2024, it became too small and stagnant to be considered a glacier anymore.
Why did this happen?
The main cause is global climate change, especially:
Rising average temperatures
Tropical location of the glaciers (already warm and vulnerable)
Deforestation and local warming effects
Black carbon (soot) deposits that speed up ice melting by absorbing heat
Why is it important?
This loss is significant because:
It shows how quickly fragile ice systems are disappearing worldwide
Glaciers are important sources of freshwater for ecosystems and humans
It serves as a warning that other tropical and mountain glaciers may also vanish if warming continues
In short, Venezuela’s glacier loss is not just a national event—it is a clear signal of the rapid impact of global warming on Earth’s cryosphere.
