Description
In Bengaluru, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday refused to consider the state government’s request to review an earlier order directing that the valuation of the recently held SSLC exams be carried out according to the existing rules.
The bench led by E. S. Indiresh observed that the government introduced a revised evaluation method only after the examinations had already taken place, and without issuing any formal notification or framing the necessary rules.
Under the proposed system, third-language subjects would be assessed using grades instead of marks, and these scores would not be included in calculating the final SSLC result. Challenging the earlier directive, Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty argued that many students had failed in Hindi, their third language, and the change was intended to reduce academic pressure. He also informed the court that amendments to formalize this system were being prepared.
However, the court emphasized that such policy changes should have been clarified and officially notified before implementation. It also noted that with an overall pass percentage of 83%, the rationale behind altering the system after the exams was questionable.
Earlier in the week, the court had directed authorities to evaluate SSLC answer sheets in line with the rules specified in the 2025–26 academic notification. This direction came while hearing a petition filed by three students who had taken the exams between March 18 and April 2.
The dispute arose after School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced on March 27 that the third-language paper would shift from a marks-based system to grading, without affecting overall results. The announcement was made before the third-language exam, prompting students to challenge the decision.
