Description
India’s rich history is reflected in the changing names of its regions. Just as cities like Patna were once known as Pataliputra and Varanasi as Kashi, Jharkhand has also been known by several names over time. These names highlight its cultural, historical, and geographical evolution.
What Was Jharkhand Called Earlier?
Jharkhand did not always carry its present name. In ancient and medieval periods, the region was referred to by various names such as Pundra, Kark Khand, Ark Khand, Khukhra (or Kokrah), and later Chhota Nagpur. Each of these names reflects different historical phases, rulers, and traditions associated with the region.
Ancient Names of Jharkhand
In early historical texts like the Aitareya Brahmana (around 800–500 BCE), the region was mentioned as Pundra or Pundra Desh. Later, in ancient epics such as the Mahabharata, it was referred to as Kark Khand or Ark Khand. These references indicate that the region had recognition and importance even in ancient India.
Names During the Medieval Period
During the Mughal era, particularly in the 16th century, the region came to be known as Khukhra or Kokrah. These names appear in historical records like the Akbarnama. At that time, the area was widely known for its dense forests, mineral wealth, and strong tribal presence.
British Period Name
Under British rule, the region was called Chhota Nagpur and was organized as an administrative division. This name remained in use for a long time and continues today in the form of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, a significant geographical feature of eastern India.
Origin of the Name Jharkhand
The term “Jharkhand” is derived from Sanskrit, where “Jhar” means forest and “Khand” means land. Together, it translates to the “Land of Forests,” which perfectly describes the region’s dense greenery and natural resources.
When Did Jharkhand Become a State?
Although the name Jharkhand has ancient roots, it officially became a separate state on 15 November 2000 after being carved out of Bihar. This date was chosen to honor Birsa Munda, a revered tribal leader and freedom fighter.
