Description

Barnard College is preparing for a two-year transition to a new student information system called Workday Student as part of a wider effort to modernize its digital infrastructure, according to a report by Columbia Spectator.

Barnard President Laura Rosenbury informed the college community about the change in a recent email. The new platform is designed to bring together several academic and administrative services that are currently managed across different systems, including degree tracking, academic advising, and financial aid information.

The implementation process will begin next month, with the system expected to go live at the start of the fall 2028 semester.

Integration of Multiple Systems

As reported by Columbia Spectator, Workday Student will unify several existing tools such as Colleague, Slate, Salesforce, and Columbia University’s Student Information Services into a single platform.

Barnard initially adopted Workday in 2022 for administrative operations like human resources, payroll, finance, and student employment management.

Kelli Murray, the college’s executive vice president for strategy and chief administrative officer, noted that the transition is not intended to simply replace existing tools one-to-one. She explained that the institution is still evaluating which systems will be retained or phased out.

Faculty and Student Involvement

To ensure a smooth rollout, Barnard plans to include students and faculty members in advisory groups. These groups will help test the system and provide feedback before full implementation.

Murray also confirmed that the course registration platform Vergil, used jointly by Barnard and Columbia University, will remain unchanged to preserve cross-registration between the institutions.

Financial Considerations

While the transition requires significant upfront investment, the college expects long-term savings by reducing the number of separate systems it currently maintains. However, the overall financial impact is still under review.

This shift comes at a time when Barnard is facing financial challenges. The college’s long-term debt increased to $274 million in fiscal year 2025, compared to approximately $184 million the previous year. In response, the institution has implemented cost-cutting measures, including staff reductions and tuition increases.

Streamlining Administration

At present, student records are distributed across multiple platforms, often requiring manual coordination to assemble complete profiles.

According to college leadership, this fragmentation increases administrative workload and limits efficiency. President Rosenbury noted that staff often spend excessive time navigating between systems rather than focusing on direct student engagement.

The new system aims to simplify these processes, allowing employees to dedicate more time to student services rather than administrative tasks.

Part of a Long-Term Strategy

The transition to Workday Student is part of Barnard’s broader “Bold History, Fearless Future” initiative launched in 2024, which focuses on institutional modernization and improved infrastructure.

Officials say the shift reflects a broader response to evolving technology and data management needs in higher education.

While Workday Student represents an important step in this direction, college leadership emphasized that additional changes are expected as part of the long-term strategy. Several aspects of the rollout, including final system configurations and replacement decisions, are still under consideration.
