India’s electoral process attracted considerable international interest during the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026, held alongside the Assembly elections in Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam. A total of 38 delegates representing 22 countries participated as observers, commending the scale, organisation, and level of public participation in the elections. International Delegates Observe Election Procedures

The delegates conducted a two-day visit to important polling regions, starting with inspections of dispatch and distribution centres. They observed the organised movement of polling personnel and election materials, carried out according to established standard operating procedures. Meetings with Chief Electoral Officers and security authorities offered valuable insights into the planning, coordination, and law-and-order arrangements required to ensure smooth election operations.

Emphasis on Transparency Through Technology

One of the key highlights for the visiting delegates was the widespread use of technology in monitoring the electoral process. They toured CCTV control rooms responsible for overseeing 100 percent webcasting of polling stations. These digital monitoring systems ensured continuous surveillance and were widely appreciated as effective tools for maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the voting process. 

Inclusive Measures Encourage Wider Participation

On polling day, the delegates witnessed mock drills and later visited polling booths across multiple districts. They praised the inclusive facilities provided to voters, including ramps, wheelchairs, volunteer assistance, and crèche services. Special polling stations operated by women and persons with disabilities further reflected India’s dedication to accessible and participatory elections.

Observers also acknowledged innovative initiatives such as drone-based surveillance, media monitoring centres, and themed polling stations designed to attract young voters. In some areas, additional services like health check-ups and eco-friendly initiatives were integrated into polling arrangements. Overall, the smooth conduct of the elections and the strong voter turnout reinforced India’s standing as a global model for managing large-scale democratic processes.
