Karnataka has emerged as the top-performing state in training women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as drone pilots under the Namo Drone Didi Yojana (NDDY). The initiative represents a major step towards women’s empowerment while promoting the use of modern technology in agriculture, supporting India’s vision of precision farming and rural development.

Overview of Namo Drone Didi Yojana

The Namo Drone Didi Yojana is a central sector scheme designed to empower women-led SHGs under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission.

The scheme introduces drone technology into agriculture by enabling SHGs to offer drone-based services to farmers. These services mainly include spraying fertilisers and pesticides, which improves efficiency and reduces manual effort.

Objectives and Targets

The government has set a target to distribute 15,000 drones to selected women SHGs during 2024–25 and 2025–26.

The initiative aims to enhance income opportunities for rural women, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and encourage digital inclusion in farming communities.

Financial Assistance and Training Support

Under the scheme, the government provides 80% financial assistance for purchasing drones, up to Rs.8 lakh. The remaining 20% can be financed through loans under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund with a 3% interest subsidy.

Each SHG nominates one member for a 15-day training programme, which includes drone pilot certification and specialised training for agricultural applications.

Implementation and Institutional Framework

The scheme is implemented through coordination among multiple departments, including agriculture, rural development, and fertiliser sectors, along with leading fertiliser companies.

This integrated approach ensures effective implementation, technical support, and wider outreach, strengthening the role of women in modern agriculture.
