Amid rising tensions in West Asia and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian Navy has launched a major maritime initiative by deploying INS Sunayna as part of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR mission from Mumbai. This move reflects India’s commitment to regional stability and cooperative maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

Strategic Context and Mission Launch

The mission comes at a time when the West Asia conflict has entered a prolonged phase, impacting global energy supplies and key trade routes. The deployment was flagged off by Sanjay Seth in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi.

The initiative underlines India’s proactive role in ensuring freedom of navigation and protecting vital sea lanes during heightened geopolitical tensions.

Expanding Maritime Competition

According to Admiral Tripathi, maritime competition today goes beyond traditional resources like oil and gas. It now includes strategic areas such as rare earth minerals, seabed resources, fisheries, and even data infrastructure.

The growing global competition has turned the maritime domain into a critical arena of geopolitical rivalry, making collaboration among nations more important than ever.

Rising Maritime Security Challenges

The Indian Ocean Region is facing multiple security threats, including illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, piracy, armed robbery, and drug trafficking. Reports indicate around 3,700 maritime incidents in the past year, with narcotics seizures crossing $1 billion in 2025.

There are also increasing concerns about deep-sea exploration activities that could impact national sovereignty.

Mission Objectives and Regional Engagement

The IOS SAGAR mission includes participation from personnel of 16 countries, promoting multilateral cooperation. The ship will visit key ports such as Colombo, Phuket, Jakarta, Singapore, Chittagong, Yangon, and Male before concluding at Kochi.

The deployment will focus on training and capacity-building activities including navigation, maritime safety, communication, firefighting, damage control, and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations.
