Parents in Tamil Nadu planning to secure LKG and Class I admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the 2026–27 academic year should note the upcoming schedule. The online and offline application process will begin on April 20, 2026, and close on May 18, 2026, providing nearly a month to submit applications through the official TN RTE portal or directly at the preferred private school.
Age and Eligibility Criteria
LKG applicants: Children must be born between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023
Class I applicants: Children must be born between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2020
EWS category: Annual family income must not exceed Rs 2 lakh

Application Process and Required Documents
Parents must submit documents verifying the child’s age, residence, caste/category, and income. For children in special categories (orphans, children with disabilities, children of sanitation workers, or children with HIV), additional documents are required. Document verification will take place between April 22 and May 19, and any missing documents will prompt an SMS notification. Missing documents must be submitted by 5 PM on May 19.
The lottery for admission will be held on May 22, with the final list released on May 29. Children in special categories will be given preference prior to the lottery. Parents should carefully select priorities while applying, as changes cannot be made after submission.
List of Required Documents
For all applicants:
Age proof: Birth certificate from Gram Panchayat, Municipal Corporation, hospital, or Anganwadi/Balwadi
Address proof: Aadhaar card, Passport, electricity/water bills, Voter ID in parent’s name; rent agreement only if others unavailable
Caste/category proof: Certificate from competent authority for reserved categories
Income proof: Certificate for EWS with maximum annual income of Rs 2 lakh, issued by a competent authority
Photo: Recent passport-size color photograph
Acknowledgment receipt: Issued by school/portal upon submission
Bank statement: Copy of passbook if available
Self-declaration: If no PAN card or income tax return, stating income is non-taxable
Special category documents:
Orphans: Certificate from District Child Welfare Committee (DCWC)
Children with HIV: Medical certificate from authorized authority
Children with disabilities: Certificate from civil surgeon or medical authority
Children of sanitation workers: Certificate issued by municipal authorities
Children from transparent category: Certificate from competent authority
Parents should ensure all documents are clear, readable, and submitted within April 20 – May 18.
Seat Calculation and Guidelines
Private matriculation schools are required to calculate RTE seats for LKG and Class I and submit the data to district chief education officers by April 7. Seats will be displayed on school notice boards on April 7 and made available on the TN RTE portal on April 15.
This year, the RTE admission process has returned to inviting fresh applications, unlike last year when schools transferred eligible students directly to the RTE quota. Parents are encouraged to prepare documents in advance to ensure smooth application submission.
