CBSE Clarifies QR Codes On Class 12 Question Papers: Orry & Rickroll Rumors Debunked

Description

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a detailed advisory addressing viral claims that QR codes on Class 12 board exam question papers are linked to internet personality Orry and singer Rick Astley. The Board clarified that such claims are misleading and factually incorrect.

The clarification follows widespread online discussions after QR codes appeared on recent CBSE question papers, including the Class 12 History exam on March 30. Some students claimed that scanning these codes led to search results related to Orry. A similar situation occurred during the March 9 Mathematics exam, where reports suggested students were redirected to Rick Astley’s viral song Never Gonna Give You Up, a well-known “rickroll” prank.

QR Codes Serve Security Purposes, Not Web Access

CBSE emphasized that the QR codes on question papers are not intended to act as internet links. Instead, they are part of the Board’s internal system for authentication, tracking, and ensuring exam integrity. Scanning a QR code may display encoded text, but it does not directly open any websites or multimedia content.

How the Orry and Rickroll Confusion Arose

The Board explained that the confusion emerged when students copied and searched the decoded text online. Search engines may return unrelated results due to algorithmic recommendations, which in some cases included references to public figures such as Orry. These unintended outcomes fueled social media buzz, with videos and screenshots widely shared. The influencer Orry himself expressed surprise at being mentioned in the context of a board exam.

CBSE Condemns Misrepresentation

CBSE stated that certain parties are deliberately misrepresenting these unrelated search results to create confusion and damage the Board’s reputation. The advisory emphasized:
"The linking of QR codes to unrelated individuals or content is factually incorrect and misleading."

Advisory for Students, Parents, and Media

The Board urged all stakeholders to avoid spreading unverified claims and to rely only on official communication channels. Media platforms were also cautioned against amplifying speculative narratives that could distort facts.

Exam Integrity Remains Intact

CBSE reassured students and parents that the examination process remains secure. The QR codes are purely technical safeguards designed to verify the authenticity of question papers and maintain exam integrity.

This clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny on social media during the ongoing board exam season, where minor anomalies can quickly become viral stories.
