India’s Most Literate Cities Revealed

Recent government data highlights that smaller and mid-sized cities are leading India in literacy rates. Instead of large metropolitan areas, cities like Aizawl and Kochi have emerged as the country’s most educated urban centres, reflecting strong local education systems and community support.

Aizawl Tops the Literacy Rankings

Aizawl has secured the top position as India’s most literate city, with an impressive literacy rate of 98.36%. The city shows nearly universal literacy among both men and women, with male literacy at 98.52% and female literacy at 98.21%.

This achievement is largely attributed to consistent investment in education, the role of community institutions, and the influence of church-run schools that have promoted learning across generations.

Kochi and Kerala Cities Dominate the List

Kerala continues to maintain its reputation as India’s most literate state, with multiple cities ranking among the top. Kochi holds the second position with an overall literacy rate of 97.36%.

In Kochi, male literacy stands at 98.25%, while female literacy is 96.51%, indicating a relatively small gender gap. Other cities from Kerala also feature prominently, including Thrissur (97.06%), Kozhikode (96.53%), Alappuzha (96.20%), and Thiruvananthapuram (95.10%).

Why Does Kerala Lead in Literacy?

The strong performance of Kerala is the result of long-term investment in education, well-developed public schooling systems, and a consistent focus on female literacy. Social awareness, access to quality education, and supportive government policies have played a major role in maintaining high literacy levels across the state.

Other Notable Cities

Outside Mizoram and Kerala, Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu has also secured a place among the top cities, with a literacy rate of 94.99%. The city is known for its strong educational institutions, including missionary-run schools that have contributed significantly to its literacy achievements.

Across these leading cities, the gap between male and female literacy rates is relatively small compared to other parts of India. In Aizawl, the difference is just 0.31 percentage points, while in cities like Thrissur and Kozhikode, it remains below two percentage points.
