ESA Launches Celeste Satellites to Boost Navigation Capabilities

The European Space Agency has achieved a major milestone in satellite navigation with the successful launch of the first two satellites of the Celeste in-orbit demonstration mission. The satellites were carried into space by Rocket Lab aboard its Electron rocket from New Zealand, highlighting Europe’s efforts to strengthen its navigation infrastructure.

Celeste Mission and Launch Details

The satellites, Celeste IOD-1 and IOD-2, were launched on March 28 at 10:14 CET and separated from the launch vehicle roughly an hour later. Developed by GMV and Thales Alenia Space, the satellites have entered their initial operational phase.

During this stage, mission control teams will conduct system checks and prepare the satellites for full functionality.

Supporting the Galileo Navigation System

The primary goal of the mission is to test a new navigation layer in low Earth orbit (LEO) that will complement the existing Galileo system, which operates in medium Earth orbit.

Satellites in LEO operate closer to Earth, allowing them to deliver stronger signals, greater accuracy, and improved reliability in navigation services.

Technological Advancements

The Celeste satellites will evaluate advanced technologies, including new signal structures and service capabilities. They operate in L- and S-band frequencies, following regulations set by the International Telecommunication Union.

The mission also adopts a “New Space” model, focusing on rapid development and flexible deployment of satellites, which enhances innovation and efficiency.
