Description
The Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra is set to take over the management of its notified buffer zone from April 1, 2026. This transition is expected to strengthen conservation efforts and improve coordination in addressing human-wildlife interactions around the reserve.
Location and Ecological Importance
NNTR is situated in Gondia district and forms an important part of the central Indian tiger landscape, which supports a significant share of India’s tiger population. Notified as a tiger reserve in 2013, it is the fifth such reserve in the state.
Its location ensures ecological connectivity with major reserves like Kanha Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve, and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, facilitating wildlife movement and maintaining genetic diversity.
Structure and Terrain
The reserve is made up of several protected areas, including Navegaon National Park, Navegaon Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, and Koka Wildlife Sanctuary.
The landscape is uneven and varied, with its highest point, Zenda Pahad, rising to around 702 metres above sea level. This diversity in terrain supports multiple habitat types.
Flora and Fauna
The vegetation is dominated by Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous forests, with approximately 364 plant species recorded. Common tree species include Terminalia tomentosa, Lagerstroemia parviflora, and Pterocarpus marsupium.
The reserve supports rich wildlife, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and gaur. Smaller species such as civets, pangolins, and flying squirrels are also found, indicating high biodiversity.

Significance of Buffer Zone Control
The transfer of buffer area management to reserve authorities will enhance planning and implementation of conservation strategies. Buffer zones act as transition areas that help reduce human-wildlife conflict while supporting local livelihoods.
Effective management of these regions is essential for ensuring long-term survival of tigers and maintaining ecological balance in the landscape.
