He was deeply influenced by Swami Dayanand Saraswati and became associated with the Arya Samaj. He later served as the first President of the Bombay Arya Samaj.

Varma was an early advocate of complete independence for India. He moved to England, where he worked to build intellectual and political support against British rule.

Through his writings and initiatives, he inspired many Indian students and young revolutionaries abroad, encouraging them to challenge colonial authority.

One of his most notable contributions was the founding of the Indian Home Rule Society in 1905 in London. The organisation aimed to secure self-governance for India and received support from leaders like Bhikaji Cama and Dadabhai Naoroji.

Additionally, his journal The Indian Sociologist played a crucial role in spreading nationalist ideas and criticising British colonial policies.
