Description

India is not only a major importer of petroleum but also produces a considerable amount of crude oil within its own territory. Although imports still meet most of the country’s energy demand, domestic production plays a key role in supporting industries, transport, and overall economic activity. Oil reserves in India are found across various regions, including both land-based and offshore locations.

Petroleum, often referred to as “Black Gold,” is one of the most important natural resources. It fuels vehicles, powers industries, and is even used in household applications. In India, several states contribute to oil production, each with its own reserves and extraction sites. These resources are explored and managed using modern technology to meet rising energy needs.

Certain regions are known for their rich underground oil deposits, while others benefit from offshore reserves located in nearby seas. Over time, advancements in exploration and drilling techniques have helped improve production levels, strengthening India’s energy security.

Understanding which state leads in petroleum production provides insight into the country’s resource distribution and economic geography.

About Petroleum

Petroleum is a fossil fuel formed over millions of years from the remains of marine plants and animals buried under layers of sediment. Due to its high energy value and wide range of uses, it remains a crucial resource worldwide.

In India, petroleum reserves are found in both onshore and offshore areas. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Assam have significant reserves, while offshore fields like Mumbai High are also major contributors.

With increasing global demand and geopolitical tensions affecting supply, petroleum continues to hold strategic importance for India’s economy.

Largest Petroleum Producing State in India

Rajasthan is the leading producer of petroleum in India, contributing roughly 20–25% of the country’s total domestic output.

The Barmer-Sanchor Basin is the main oil-producing region in the state. It hosts some of India’s largest oil fields, including Mangala, Bhagyam, and Aishwariya. These discoveries have transformed Rajasthan into a major oil-producing hub.

Oil Extraction Process

In Rajasthan, crude oil is found deep beneath the surface in sandstone formations. It was formed under high pressure and temperature conditions over millions of years.

Companies such as Cairn Oil & Gas use advanced extraction technologies to produce oil from these reserves. After extraction, the crude oil is transported through a heated pipeline stretching around 700 kilometres to refineries located in Gujarat.

Major Oil-Producing States in India

Apart from Rajasthan, several other states play an important role in oil production:

  • Gujarat – Known for fields in Ankleshwar, Mehsana, and the Cambay Basin

  • Assam – One of the oldest oil-producing regions, with fields like Digboi and Naharkatiya

  • Tamil Nadu – Produces oil mainly from the Cauvery Basin

  • Andhra Pradesh – Has reserves in the Krishna-Godavari Basin

Together, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Assam account for the majority of India’s onshore crude oil production.

Importance of Offshore Oil Fields

In addition to onshore production, offshore oil fields contribute significantly to India’s total output. The most important among them is Mumbai High, located in the Arabian Sea.

This offshore field produces a large share of India’s crude oil, often exceeding the output of any single state.

India’s Oil Demand and Production

India’s domestic oil production is increasing gradually, but demand is rising much faster. The country is among the world’s largest consumers of petroleum, using over 5.5 million barrels per day.

Despite being the top producer, Rajasthan alone cannot meet national demand. As a result, India relies heavily on imports, sourcing more than 85% of its crude oil from abroad.

Interesting Facts

  • The first oil well in Asia was drilled in Digboi, Assam, in 1889

  • Rajasthan emerged as a major oil producer only after discoveries in the early 2000s

  • Crude oil from Rajasthan is waxy in nature, requiring heated pipelines for transport

  • Offshore fields like Mumbai High contribute a major portion of India’s oil production
