About the Species

The Red-crowned Roofed Turtle is a freshwater turtle native to South Asia and belongs to the genus Batagur. It is one of the three major freshwater turtle species found in India. The species is well known for its distinctive appearance and its ecological importance within river ecosystems.

Distribution and Habitat

This turtle species occurs in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. In the past, it was widely distributed across the Ganga river system in India and Bangladesh, and it is also present in parts of the Brahmaputra basin. Over time, its natural habitat has declined considerably, leaving surviving populations mainly confined to protected river stretches or fragmented habitats that are often supported through conservation initiatives.

Physical Characteristics and Ecological Importance

Male Red-crowned Roofed Turtles are noticeably smaller than females, typically reaching only about half their size. They are easily recognised by their reddish-orange head topped with a black crown and a greenish-brown shell decorated with yellow markings. The underside of the shell (plastron) is yellow with dark patterns.

The species follows an omnivorous diet, feeding on aquatic vegetation as well as small animals. It plays an important ecological role as a bio-indicator of river health and contributes to nutrient cycling, helping maintain the balance of aquatic ecosystems.

The Red-crowned Roofed Turtle is classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is also listed under Appendix II of CITES and receives the highest legal protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Increasing threats such as river pollution, sand mining, and infrastructure development have led to severe habitat loss, making conservation measures and habitat restoration crucial for ensuring the survival of this species
