Eligibility Criteria
The awards are open to scientists, technologists, and innovators working in government bodies, private institutions, or independently. Individuals who have delivered groundbreaking contributions through research, discoveries, or innovations in any area of science and technology are eligible. Additionally, Persons of Indian Origin living abroad who have made meaningful contributions to Indian communities or supported national development are also eligible for consideration.
Categories of Awards
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is conferred under four major categories. Vigyan Ratna recognises lifetime achievements in science and technology. Vigyan Shri is awarded for distinguished contributions in scientific fields. Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar honours young scientists below the age of 45 who demonstrate exceptional potential. Vigyan Team acknowledges collaborative research by groups of three or more members, highlighting the importance of teamwork in advancing scientific knowledge.
The awards are managed by the RVP Secretariat under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research within the Ministry of Science and Technology. The selection process is overseen by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.
