NASA has initiated a Rs.283.8 crore ($30 million) mission to prevent the ageing Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from losing orbit and potentially re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. Operational since 2004, the observatory has been gradually descending due to orbital decay, prompting a unique effort to extend its operational life.
About the Swift Observatory
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is an important space telescope under NASA’s Medium Explorer (MIDEX) programme. Launched in 2004 into low-Earth orbit, it has been instrumental in studying gamma-ray bursts, which are among the most energetic events in the universe. With advanced instruments such as the Burst Alert Telescope, it can quickly detect and observe high-energy cosmic phenomena, making it highly valuable for astrophysics research.
Why the Satellite is Losing Altitude
The observatory is slowly moving closer to Earth due to increased solar activity. When solar activity rises, it heats and expands the upper layers of the atmosphere, creating more resistance (drag) for satellites in low-Earth orbit. This drag gradually reduces their altitude. By early 2026, Swift’s orbit had dropped below 400 kilometres, raising concerns about its long-term stability.
NASA’s Rescue Plan and Technology
To address this issue, NASA plans to use a robotic spacecraft developed by Katalyst Space Technologies. The robotic vehicle will dock with the observatory using specialised arms and push it into a higher orbit of around 550 kilometres. This process, known as a “reboost,” is expected to extend the telescope’s life by nearly a decade. After completing the task, the robotic craft will separate and safely burn up in the atmosphere.
