Description
The Union Government has approved a rescheduling of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) 2026 for candidates who are unable to appear on April 5, which coincides with Easter Sunday. This decision follows appeals from church authorities and community representatives. Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum & Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, announced the update on Friday, noting that the second phase of the JEE exams, scheduled between April 2 and 10, had raised concerns due to its overlap with Holy Week.
Gopi mentioned that he had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, referencing a representation submitted by Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos. According to Gopi, Pradhan assured him that students unable to take the exam on April 5 would be provided an option to apply for an alternative date.
Process to Request Rescheduling
Students wishing to reschedule their exam must email their details to jeemain.query@nta.ac.in. The last date to submit requests is March 28, 2026. Gopi expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Education and the central government for promptly addressing the concerns of students and the community.
Religious Sensitivity
The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) had previously appealed to authorities to avoid scheduling all-India engineering entrance exams on significant Christian holy days, including Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday.
The government’s decision highlights an increased awareness of religious sensitivities in academic scheduling and provides relief to thousands of aspiring engineering students who observe these holy days.
