India’s aviation sector is set to expand significantly as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Noida International Airport on March 28, 2026, in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This marks the launch of Phase I of one of the country’s largest greenfield airport projects. The new airport is expected to improve connectivity and reduce traffic pressure in the Delhi-NCR region. It will operate alongside the Indira Gandhi International Airport, forming a dual-airport system to strengthen the region’s aviation capacity.

Strategic Location and Connectivity

The airport is located in Jewar, in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, and benefits from excellent connectivity through the Yamuna Expressway. Its close proximity to Delhi and nearby urban centres makes it a key infrastructure development for North India. Planned as part of an integrated aviation network with IGI Airport, this dual-airport model aims to handle rising passenger traffic more efficiently and reduce congestion.

Investment and Development Model

The project is being developed with an estimated investment of ?11,200 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It is being executed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. The concession agreement spans 40 years, starting from October 1, 2021, ensuring long-term development and efficient operations. The airport has also received an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, allowing it to operate for public use with all-weather capability.

Capacity and Key Features

In its first phase, the airport is designed to handle around 12 million passengers annually, with future expansion plans to scale up to 70 million passengers per year. This makes it one of India’s most ambitious airport projects.

• A 3,900-meter runway suitable for wide-body aircraft

• Advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS) for safe landings

• Modern airfield lighting for 24/7 operations

• High-end navigation and operational systems

Sustainability and Design Vision

A major highlight of the Noida International Airport is its focus on sustainability. It is planned as a net-zero emissions airport, incorporating energy-efficient technologies and environmentally friendly practices.
