Syntrichia caninervis can lose more than 98% of its internal water and remain inactive for long periods. Once it encounters moisture again, it quickly resumes photosynthesis within seconds. This rapid recovery makes it highly suited for environments where water is scarce and irregular.

Researchers conducted experiments under simulated Martian conditions, including low atmospheric pressure, high carbon dioxide levels, and strong ultraviolet radiation. Despite these challenges, the moss survived for several days and later showed signs of regrowth, indicating its ability to tolerate the harsh surface environment of Mars.

Resistance to Extreme Cold and Radiation

The moss demonstrated exceptional tolerance to extreme cold, surviving temperatures as low as -196°C.
