Description
The traditional “Peth” festival dedicated to Goddess Kelbai is being celebrated in Mulgao, with rituals beginning at midnight on March 23. This unique festival reflects the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the region, attracting devotees who take part in a symbolic journey representing the annual meeting of the goddess with her sister.
Sacred Procession and Ritual Journey
As per tradition, Goddess Kelbai is placed inside a decorated wooden structure known as a “peth” and carried from Mulgao to Mayem. The journey signifies her visit to her sister deity linked with the Maya Kelbai Panchayatan Devasthan. This ritual takes place on the auspicious occasion of Chaitra Shuddha Panchami and holds deep religious importance for local communities.
Participation and Devotional Practices
A large number of devotees, including members of the Dhond and Chowgule communities, join the procession. The “peth” is carried on the head by a selected individual known as the “Mode,” who is believed to remain in a trance-like state during the journey. Devotees offer flowers such as aboli placed on coconuts and perform the ritual of Kaul to seek blessings and guidance from the goddess.
Route and Symbolic Traditions
The procession follows a traditional forest path passing through areas like Vhalshim, Bordem, Bhailipeth, Sonar Peth, and Pazwada before reaching Mayem. During the journey, symbolic acts are performed, including moments when the trance-bound carrier attempts to move towards the Shri Shantadurga Temple, which is gently restrained by accompanying devotees as part of the ritual.
