The Union Home Minister paid homage to Guru Angad Dev on the occasion of his Jyoti-Jyot Diwas. Early Life and Background Guru Angad Dev was born as Lahna on 31 March 1504 in Matte-di-Sarai, located in present-day Punjab. He became the second Sikh Guru in 1539, succeeding Guru Nanak Dev. His leadership continued until 1552, during which he played a key role in strengthening the early Sikh community. Development of Gurmukhi Script One of his most important contributions was refining and promoting the Gurmukhi script. By standardising this script, he made it easier to record and spread Sikh teachings in the Punjabi language. Social and Educational Contributions Guru Angad Dev established educational centres, including one at Khadur Sahib, where children were taught the Gurmukhi script. He also encouraged physical fitness through activities like wrestling, alongside promoting discipline and ethical living. Additionally, he strengthened the tradition of Langar, ensuring free community meals for all, regardless of caste or social background.
