Description
Lipulekh Pass Trade to Resume, Reviving India–China Border Commerce
Cross-border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh Pass in Pithoragarh district is scheduled to resume in June, signalling the revival of long-standing economic and cultural interactions. The reopening is anticipated to support local livelihoods and strengthen traditional trade linkages across the Himalayan region.
Location and Geographical Features
Lipulekh Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, close to the trijunction of India, Nepal, and China. It connects India to the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and lies at an elevation of about 5,334 metres above sea level. Owing to its strategic location, the pass functions as an important gateway to the higher Himalayan ranges.
Historical Importance and Trade Connectivity
For centuries, Lipulekh Pass has served as a traditional trade corridor linking the Indian subcontinent with the Tibetan plateau. In 1992, it became the first officially designated Indian border post for trade with China, enabling controlled exchange of goods. Later, additional routes such as Shipki La in Himachal Pradesh and Nathu La in Sikkim were opened to further promote cross-border trade.
Religious and Cultural Significance
The pass holds deep religious importance as it forms a key route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage undertaken by followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It also supports the traditional livelihoods of border communities, particularly the Bhotiya tribes, who have historically relied on trans-Himalayan commerce.
The revival of trade through Lipulekh Pass is expected to boost regional economic growth and strengthen border infrastructure. It enhances India’s strategic presence along the Himalayan frontier while promoting connectivity with neighbouring regions. Additionally, the move is likely to rejuvenate traditional trading systems and improve the socio-economic conditions of communities in Uttarakhand.
