Description
The Tamil Nadu government recently informed the Madras High Court that unauthorized resorts operating within the eco-sensitive zone of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) have been locked and sealed. This action is intended to bolster conservation efforts and safeguard the delicate wildlife habitats of this ecologically vital region.
Location and Ecological Importance
Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, situated in Tamil Nadu at the intersection of the Eastern and Western Ghats, is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It functions as a critical wildlife corridor, linking major protected areas such as Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Bandipur Tiger Reserve, and BRT Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. This connectivity facilitates genetic exchange among wildlife populations, especially tigers and elephants.
Terrain, Climate, and River Systems
The reserve encompasses hilly and undulating terrain, with elevations ranging from 750 to 1,649 metres. It experiences a subtropical climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cooler, wet monsoons that occasionally cause river flooding. Prominent rivers such as the Bhavani, Moyar, and Noyyal flow through the reserve, supporting diverse ecosystems and sustaining wildlife.
Biodiversity and Vegetation
STR boasts a rich variety of vegetation, including southern tropical dry thorn forests, mixed deciduous forests, semi-evergreen forests, and riparian forests. Its flora includes teak, sandalwood, bamboo, Terminalia, Albizia, and numerous medicinal plants. The fauna is equally diverse, featuring elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, blackbuck, spotted deer, wild boar, Nilgiri langur, and bonnet macaque.
Tribal Communities and Conservation Challenges
The reserve is also home to indigenous tribes such as the Irula and Kurumba, who rely on forest resources for their livelihoods. However, growing human pressures, including illegal tourism infrastructure, threaten the ecosystem. The government’s recent crackdown on unauthorized resorts underscores its commitment to conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance in the region.
