Indian Oil Tanker Jag Laadki Docks at Mundra Port, Strengthening Energy Supply Amid West Asia Tensions
An Indian-flagged crude oil tanker, Jag Laadki, has successfully berthed at Mundra Port in Gujarat, reinforcing India’s energy security at a time of escalating tensions in West Asia. The vessel delivered approximately 80,886 metric tonnes of crude oil sourced from the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating the robustness of India’s maritime logistics and import network.
Tanker specifications and cargo details
Jag Laadki is a large crude carrier measuring 274.19 metres in length with a beam of 50.04 metres. It has a deadweight tonnage of around 164,716 tonnes and a gross tonnage of about 84,735 tonnes. The crude shipment was loaded at Fujairah Port, a key global hub for oil storage and exports in the UAE, before being transported safely to India.
Transit through strategic maritime routes
This development follows the safe arrival of two Indian-flagged LPG carriers, MT Shivalik and MT Nanda Devi, which recently navigated the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Together, these vessels delivered 92,712 metric tonnes of LPG to India, highlighting the critical role of secure sea lanes in sustaining energy supplies.
Operation Sankalp and maritime security
India continues to maintain a strong naval presence in the region under Operation Sankalp, aimed at protecting Indian vessels and ensuring the safety of crucial shipping routes, particularly in the Persian Gulf and nearby waters. The operation has been instrumental in safeguarding trade flows amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
Government efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply
The Directorate General of Shipping is actively monitoring the situation in coordination with shipping companies and Indian missions overseas. The government is also working closely with ports and logistics stakeholders to reduce potential disruptions, including offering concessions on port charges when needed. These proactive measures are intended to ensure a steady energy supply and smooth maritime operations during a period of heightened regional tension.
