India and Indonesia Join Hands to Restore Prambanan Temple Complex
India and Indonesia have launched a joint initiative to restore the historic Prambanan Temple complex in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, signaling a major step in cultural diplomacy and heritage preservation. This collaboration emphasizes shared civilisational ties and aims to safeguard one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic Hindu architectural landmarks.
About Prambanan Temple
Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, is situated in Sleman near Yogyakarta in southern Java. Known locally as Roro Jonggrang or the “Temple of the Slender Virgin,” it was built in the 9th century under the Sanjaya dynasty. The temple honors the Hindu Trimurti—Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. After centuries of abandonment and burial, it was rediscovered and restored in the 19th century. In 1991, it earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Architectural Design and Features
Prambanan’s architecture blends indigenous Javanese styles with South Indian influences, particularly the Pallava tradition. The complex houses 240 temples, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The central area contains eight main and eight smaller temples, all constructed on a raised platform. The structures are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics, highlighting their cultural and religious significance.
Layout and Principal Temples
The complex’s three main temples are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The central Shiva Temple, the tallest at approximately 47 meters, stands as one of Southeast Asia’s most prominent temple structures. The Vishnu and Brahma temples flank the Shiva Temple, while numerous smaller shrines and companion temples complete the symmetrical layout.
The India-Indonesia restoration project not only underscores the historical influence of Indian culture across Southeast Asia but also strengthens bilateral ties through heritage conservation and tourism promotion. This initiative aims to raise global awareness of shared cultural legacies and ensure that Prambanan Temple continues to inspire future generations.
