Overview of the Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project

The Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project is a 120-megawatt run-of-river hydropower initiative situated in the Kopili River basin in Assam. Unlike large dam-based systems, run-of-river projects generate electricity by utilizing the natural flow of river water without creating extensive reservoirs. The project is spread across the West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao (North Cachar Hills) Autonomous District Council regions in central Assam.

Project Development and Funding

The project has been developed by the Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL), a state-owned power utility. Financial assistance has been provided by the Asian Development Bank under the Assam Power Sector Investment Program. This initiative focuses on strengthening the state’s power sector by enhancing electricity generation, improving transmission infrastructure, and ensuring a more reliable energy supply.

The Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project is expected to significantly improve power availability in Assam and nearby regions. The Kopili River, an important interstate river flowing through Meghalaya and Assam, originates from the Meghalaya Plateau. It passes through districts such as Karbi Anglong and Nagaon before merging with the Brahmaputra River. As the largest south bank tributary of the Brahmaputra in Assam, the river stretches approximately 256 kilometres—about 78 kilometres forming the boundary between Meghalaya and Assam, and the remaining 178 kilometres flowing within Assam.
