The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has received the Governance Now 12th PSU National Award in the “Excellence in Innovation” category for its accessibility initiative titled “Dhwani Spandana.” The award acknowledges the corporation’s efforts to improve accessibility in public transport for visually impaired passengers. The recognition was presented during the Governance Now 12th PSU National Awards ceremony held in New Delhi.

Innovative System for Visually Impaired Passengers

The Dhwani Spandana initiative introduces an onboard bus identification and navigation system designed to support visually impaired commuters. The technology allows passengers with visual disabilities to easily identify approaching buses and navigate their journeys with greater independence. Through audio-based assistance and clear identification features, the system helps passengers board the correct bus and travel more confidently.

Implementation in Mysuru City Transport Buses

The system has been deployed in 200 Mysuru City Transport buses operated by KSRTC in Mysuru. The project was developed with technical support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), which collaborated in designing and implementing the accessibility solution. By incorporating assistive technology into public transport services, the initiative demonstrates how transit systems can become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Enhancing Mobility and Independence

Officials highlighted that the system reduces the reliance of visually impaired passengers on others while travelling. It enhances safety, improves accessibility, and encourages independent mobility within the urban transport network. The initiative has also helped boost confidence and freedom of movement among visually impaired commuters using city bus services.
