Description

A recent study has revealed that NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission had a more significant impact than originally anticipated. The experiment not only altered the trajectory of a small asteroid within its binary system but also caused a subtle change in the orbit of the entire system around the Sun. These findings underscore the potential of spacecraft collisions as an effective planetary defense strategy to protect Earth from hazardous asteroids.

Target of the DART Mission

The DART mission focused on Dimorphos, a small asteroid orbiting a larger asteroid named Didymos. Dimorphos measures roughly 170 metres in diameter, while Didymos spans about 805 metres. Together, they form a binary asteroid system orbiting the Sun. Since this asteroid pair poses no threat to Earth, it provided an ideal natural laboratory for testing asteroid deflection technologies.

The Historic Spacecraft Collision

In September 2022, NASA deliberately crashed the DART spacecraft into Dimorphos at nearly 22,500 kilometres per hour. The mission tested the kinetic impactor method, which aims to change an asteroid’s path by striking it with a spacecraft. This event marked humanity’s first real-world attempt to modify the trajectory of a celestial object.

Changes in Dimorphos’ Orbit

Prior to the collision, Dimorphos completed an orbit around Didymos in approximately 11 hours and 55 minutes. Following the impact, this period shortened to about 11 hours and 23 minutes, a reduction of roughly 33 minutes. The change exceeded initial predictions, confirming that the kinetic impact successfully altered the asteroid’s motion within its binary system.

Effects on the Entire Asteroid System

Further analysis revealed that the impact slightly modified the orbit of the Didymos–Dimorphos system around the Sun. Researchers found that the system’s solar orbital period shifted by approximately 0.15 seconds, with a velocity change of about 11.7 microns per second. Scientists attribute this effect to the massive plume of debris ejected during the collision, which acted like a natural rocket exhaust and amplified the impact’s force. These results demonstrate that even relatively small spacecraft can produce measurable changes in celestial bodies’ motion, reinforcing the potential of kinetic impact techniques for future planetary defense efforts.
