Description
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched its first formal Bug Bounty Programme to strengthen the cybersecurity of the Aadhaar ecosystem. The initiative encourages cybersecurity professionals to identify vulnerabilities in important UIDAI digital platforms and report them through a responsible disclosure process. In return, participants will receive monetary rewards depending on the severity of the security flaws they discover. The programme is designed to improve the protection of Aadhaar’s digital infrastructure as cyber threats continue to evolve.
Objective of the Bug Bounty Programme
Bug bounty initiatives are widely adopted across the technology sector to enhance system security. Through this programme, selected ethical hackers and cybersecurity researchers will evaluate UIDAI’s digital platforms to uncover potential security weaknesses. By allowing independent experts to test these systems, UIDAI hopes to detect hidden vulnerabilities early and resolve them before they can be misused.
Platforms Included in the Programme
Participants will review several key digital services managed by UIDAI. These include the official UIDAI website, the myAadhaar portal, and the Secure QR Code application used for Aadhaar verification. Researchers will assess these platforms for possible security issues, which will be categorized into four risk levels: Critical, High, Medium, and Low. The reward amount will depend on the severity and potential impact of the vulnerabilities reported.
Involvement of Cybersecurity Researchers
A group of twenty experienced cybersecurity specialists and ethical hackers has been selected to take part in this programme. They will conduct systematic vulnerability assessments and submit their findings through an organised reporting process. UIDAI is implementing this initiative in collaboration with ComOlho IT Private Limited, a cybersecurity firm that is assisting in managing and operating the programme.
Enhancing Aadhaar System Security
UIDAI already follows multiple cybersecurity measures such as routine security audits, vulnerability testing, penetration testing, and continuous monitoring of its digital infrastructure. The Bug Bounty Programme introduces an additional layer of protection by involving external experts in identifying potential security gaps. With this initiative, UIDAI aims to maintain a secure and reliable Aadhaar system that safeguards the digital identity of millions of residents across India.
