Description
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is hosting an international event titled the Global Conference on Women in Agri-Food Systems (GCWAS–2026) from 12 to 14 March 2026 in New Delhi. The conference will be held at the Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam Hall located within the ICAR Convention Centre at the NASC Complex. The three-day gathering seeks to highlight the importance of women’s contributions to agriculture and encourage policies and innovations that strengthen gender inclusion across global agri-food systems.
Participation of National Leaders
The inaugural ceremony will be led by President Droupadi Murmu, marking the official opening of the conference. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare as well as Rural Development, will attend the event as the Guest of Honour during the inaugural session. The conference will conclude with a valedictory programme where Annapurna Devi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, will participate as the Chief Guest. The event is being organised in the same year that the United Nations has designated as the International Year for Women Farmers (2026).
Institutions Behind the Conference
The conference is being coordinated jointly by several organisations involved in agricultural research and policy. These include the Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS), ICAR, the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA). In addition, over fifteen national and international institutions are supporting the event as collaborating partners and knowledge contributors. The planning and guidance of the programme involve senior agricultural experts such as Dr Raj S. Paroda, Chairman of TAAS, and Dr M. L. Jat, who currently serves as Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of ICAR.
Main Theme and Discussions
GCWAS–2026 carries the theme “Driving Progress, Attaining New Heights.” The discussions will focus on strengthening the role of women farmers and ensuring greater participation of women in agricultural decision-making and economic activities. The conference is expected to bring together more than 700 participants, including scientists, government representatives, development practitioners, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, students, and women farmers from different countries. Technical sessions will explore topics such as gender-responsive agricultural policies, women-led agribusiness opportunities, value-chain participation, technological advancement, and climate-smart farming practices.
Forums and Knowledge Exchange
Special discussion platforms will be organised during the event, including a Women Farmers’ Forum and a Youth Forum. These platforms aim to encourage dialogue on grassroots issues while also engaging young professionals and students interested in agriculture and food systems. Alongside the sessions, an exhibition will showcase technologies, innovations, and agricultural products developed by women entrepreneurs and women-led start-ups.
Broader Objectives
The conference is intended to facilitate global dialogue and knowledge sharing on gender equality in agriculture. Outcomes from the event are expected to include policy recommendations, identification of successful global practices, and strategies for strengthening women’s participation in agri-food systems. By bringing together experts and practitioners from different regions, the conference seeks to contribute to the development of more inclusive and sustainable agricultural policies worldwide.
