Description
Rahul Bhatia, billionaire entrepreneur and co-founder of IndiGo, has assumed the role of the airline’s interim Chief Executive Officer after the resignation of Pieter Elbers. The leadership change comes at a time when India’s largest airline by market share is dealing with several operational challenges. Bhatia, who has been instrumental in shaping IndiGo’s growth over the years, will temporarily oversee the airline’s management while the company works through the transition period.
Early Life and Education
Rahul Bhatia was born in Nainital, Uttarakhand. He completed his higher education in Canada, earning a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo. After finishing his studies, he returned to India in 1984 with plans to launch a telecommunications business. However, regulatory obstacles prevented the venture from progressing, leading him to redirect his efforts toward the travel and aviation sector.
Building InterGlobe and Launching IndiGo
Bhatia later joined his father’s travel business in Delhi and developed it into InterGlobe Enterprises. Over time, the company expanded its presence across travel management, hospitality, and aviation services. In 2004, Bhatia established InterGlobe Aviation and secured an airline licence. Two years later, in 2006, he co-founded IndiGo with aviation industry veteran Rakesh Gangwal. The airline adopted a disciplined low-cost model focused on operational efficiency, rapid aircraft turnaround, and maintaining a standardized fleet. This approach enabled IndiGo to expand quickly and gain a significant share of India’s domestic aviation market.
Growth of IndiGo and Leadership Developments
With Bhatia’s strategic leadership, IndiGo soon became the leading airline in India. By 2010, the carrier had captured nearly one-fifth of the domestic aviation market. In later years, differences arose between Bhatia and co-founder Rakesh Gangwal regarding management practices and corporate governance. Gangwal eventually stepped down from the board and gradually reduced his shareholding in the airline.
Despite these developments, IndiGo has retained its position as India’s largest airline in terms of passenger traffic and market share. Rahul Bhatia remains one of India’s wealthiest entrepreneurs and a key figure in the aviation industry. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at around $6.5 billion as of March 2026. Based in Delhi, he continues to play a major role in guiding IndiGo’s strategic direction through his leadership in InterGlobe Enterprises and InterGlobe Aviation.
