Description

On 7 March 2026, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah formally inaugurated the Sulphuric Acid Plant–III (SAP–III) at the IFFCO complex in Paradeep, Odisha, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s fertiliser production capabilities. The new facility is designed to support agricultural productivity and reflects the government’s continued focus on enhancing cooperative institutions and modernising fertiliser infrastructure.

Strengthening Fertiliser Production

The SAP–III plant, developed at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore, has a production capacity of around 2,000 metric tonnes per day. It is the third sulphuric acid production stream at Paradeep and will improve the efficiency of operations while ensuring a steady supply of raw materials for phosphatic fertiliser production.

Paradeep is among India’s largest integrated phosphatic fertiliser complexes. With this expansion, IFFCO aims to boost production and ensure that farmers across the country receive fertilisers on time.

Paradeep Unit: Growth Over Time

Amit Shah highlighted that when IFFCO acquired the Paradeep plant in 2005 for Rs 2,577 crore, it had an annual production capacity of approximately 7.5 lakh metric tonnes. Subsequent upgrades and expansions have increased the capacity to nearly 22 lakh metric tonnes, reinforcing the unit’s strategic role in India’s fertiliser sector.

Role of the Cooperative Model

The minister emphasized that cooperatives empower farmers by making them partners in agricultural infrastructure. Currently, IFFCO serves close to five crore farmers nationwide. Its financial strength with a turnover exceeding Rs 41,000 crore, profits over Rs 3,800 crore, and a net worth above Rs 28,000 crore demonstrates how cooperative institutions can drive rural development and improve farmer livelihoods.

The event was attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, IFFCO Chairman Dilip Sanghani, Managing Director K.J. Patel, and other senior officials.

Amit Shah added that the Ministry of Cooperation, in collaboration with the Odisha government, will continue efforts to improve rural livelihoods. He noted that expanding fertiliser infrastructure using advanced technology will help ensure the timely availability of agricultural inputs and boost farm productivity across India.
