The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an unconditional public apology after a controversy erupted over a chapter on the judiciary in a Class 8 social science textbook.

The issue arose after the book included references to corruption in the judiciary, which triggered strong reactions from legal experts and the Supreme Court.

Entire textbook withdrawn

NCERT announced that the Social Science book titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Grade 8 (Part-II)” has been completely withdrawn.

The controversial chapter titled “The Role of Judiciary in Our Society” contained material that the council later admitted was inappropriate.

Supreme Court ordered ban

The Supreme Court of India took a strong stance and imposed a blanket ban on the textbook, ordering the seizure of all physical copies and removal of digital versions.

The Chief Justice also warned that no one would be allowed to defame the institution of the judiciary.

Chapter will be rewritten

NCERT stated that the inclusion of the controversial material was an “error of judgement” and that the chapter will now be rewritten with expert consultation.
