Description
The first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) are set to be held from March 25 to April 6 across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja in Chhattisgarh. This initiative aims to encourage and highlight the sporting potential of tribal youth across the country. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced the event, noting that it is part of a larger effort to expand access to sports nationwide.
Showcasing Tribal Talent
The debut edition of the Games will feature seven medal sports: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling. In addition, mallakhamb and kabaddi will be presented as demonstration sports. Participants from various states and union territories will compete, creating a national stage for tribal athletes to display their skills.
Part of the National Khelo India Program
Organized under the Khelo India Scheme, a flagship government initiative, the Games aim to promote grassroots-level sports and discover young talent. The event is being conducted jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, and the Chhattisgarh state organizing committee. All competitions are set to follow international sporting standards to ensure high-quality competition.
Nurturing Future Athletes
The Khelo India Tribal Games are designed to identify and develop athletes from tribal regions, which have a history of producing remarkable sports talent. According to the Union Sports Minister, the initiative will help tribal youth integrate into the broader national sports framework. The Games also support India’s long-term vision of strengthening its sports ecosystem leading up to 2047.
Cultural Significance
The logo, theme song, and official mascot of the Games were unveiled at the Late B.R. Yadav Sports Stadium in Bilaspur. The mascot, “Morveer,” embodies the cultural identity of Chhattisgarh’s tribal communities. In Chhattisgarhi, “Mor” means “mine” or “our own,” and “Veer” signifies courage and valor. Morveer represents the pride, determination, and spirit of tribal youth participating in the Games.
