Description
Scientists have recently identified two previously unknown freshwater fish species in Nagaland, revealing the largely unexplored aquatic diversity of Northeast India. The research was published in the international journal Zootaxa by J. Praveenraj of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Island Agricultural Research Institute and independent researcher Balaji Vijayakrishnan. Both species were collected from tributaries of the Brahmaputra River in Mokokchung district.
Honoring a Late Collaborator Through Species Names
The newly discovered species, Glyptothorax sentimereni and Oreichthys elianae, were named in memory of the children of Limakum, a late assistant professor from Nagaland who had collaborated closely with the team. Naming the species after his son and daughter fulfilled one of his final wishes and serves as a lasting tribute to his contributions to ichthyology and the research community.
Glyptothorax sentimereni: A Catfish Built for Fast-Flowing Streams
Glyptothorax sentimereni was found in the rocky stretches of the Dikhu River. This species of torrent catfish is adapted to cling to rocks in strong currents using a rhomboid-shaped chest adhesive organ lined with keratinized ridges. It can be distinguished from related catfish by features such as serrated dorsal-fin spines and intricately folded pectoral and pelvic fins, traits that are unique within the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna river system.
Oreichthys elianae: A Tiny Cyprinid With Striking Colors
The second species, Oreichthys elianae, was located in a tributary of the Tsurang River. Measuring just over 2.5 centimeters, this small cyprinid stands out for its vivid red fins and a distinctive black spot near the base of its tail. Its incomplete lateral line with only five pored scales and unique cheek pores make it clearly distinct from other cyprinids in India and Southeast Asia.
Implications for Conservation and Research
These findings underscore the limited scientific knowledge of freshwater fish in Northeast India. While the region has received increasing attention for its orchids, amphibians, and insects, ichthyological studies are still in early stages. The region’s complex geological history, shaped by tectonic activity and evolving river networks, has created unique habitats that support endemic species. Continued research and conservation efforts are essential to protect the biodiversity of the Brahmaputra river system.
