Plan to restart MBBS course

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) in Jammu & Kashmir is making efforts to restart its MBBS programme. The college management has applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) seeking fresh approval for the 2026-27 academic session.

Why was recognition cancelled earlier?

In January 2026, the NMC revoked the college’s MBBS recognition after an inspection found serious deficiencies in infrastructure, faculty availability and clinical facilities. As a result, approval for 50 MBBS seats was withdrawn.

The decision created uncertainty for enrolled students, who were later considered for adjustment in other government medical colleges.

What changes are planned now?

The management claims that necessary improvements have been made. The institute has also paid about ?10 lakh as inspection and application fees to the NMC.

Another major step is the integration of Narayana Super Speciality Hospital with the medical college to strengthen hospital facilities, increase patient flow and meet regulatory requirements.

Inspection expected soon

Reports suggest that the NMC may inspect the institution again in April or May 2026. If the college successfully meets the required standards, it may receive permission to restart the MBBS course.
