Description
Goa is welcoming scientists, policymakers, and maritime experts to the fourth World Ocean Science Congress (WOSC) 2026, being held at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Panaji until February 26. The event focuses on protecting marine ecosystems, tackling climate challenges, and exploring sustainable blue economy solutions. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant praised Goa’s maritime history and the state’s emphasis on scientific research.
Oceans: Supporting Life and Economy
Chief Minister Sawant highlighted that oceans cover most of the Earth and play a key role in climate regulation. With a large portion of India’s population living along the coast, states like Goa rely heavily on the sea for livelihoods through fishing, tourism, and shipping. He stressed that preserving marine health is essential for economic growth, community wellbeing, and climate resilience.
Innovation and Research in Marine Science
The congress is organized by NIO, the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), and Goa University. This year’s discussions include advancements in ocean monitoring technologies, climate modeling, artificial intelligence applications, and underwater exploration vehicles.
A milestone highlighted at the event was the launch of a pollution control vessel built in Goa for the Indian Coast Guard, strengthening maritime safety and environmental protection. Research institutions like NIO continue to explore marine biotechnology and seabed ecosystems, contributing valuable insights to ocean science.
Focus on Climate Action and Blue Economy
The event emphasizes building a sustainable blue economy while ensuring coastal resilience. Special interactive programs include sessions for local fishermen and educational activities for hundreds of high school students, linking scientific knowledge with practical applications.
Sawant underlined that the development of marine resources must follow environmentally responsible practices. Protecting the ocean, he said, is vital for ecological balance, national security, and maritime readiness.
Bridging Science and Communities
The congress also aims to integrate traditional maritime knowledge with modern science. Workshops, exhibitions, and hands-on sessions help coastal communities and institutions collaborate, strengthen skills, and contribute to ocean conservation and climate resilience in India.
