The Punjab government has launched the ‘Meri Rasoi’ scheme, a welfare initiative aimed at providing free food kits to nearly 40 lakh economically weaker families across the state. Announced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after a Cabinet meeting in Chandigarh, the scheme seeks to strengthen nutritional support for blue card holder families in addition to the wheat already supplied under existing welfare programmes. The announcement comes ahead of the Punjab Budget Session scheduled from March 6 to March 16, 2026.
Under the Meri Rasoi scheme, eligible families will receive free food kits every three months. In the first phase, covering April to June 2026, each beneficiary family will be provided with 2 kg chana dal, 2 kg sugar, 1 kg iodized salt, 200 grams turmeric powder, and 1 litre mustard oil. These essential food items will be distributed free of cost to all blue card holder households to help improve their daily nutritional intake.
The primary objective of the initiative is to address nutritional deficiencies among low-income families, particularly children, by ensuring access to balanced and nutritious food. The government aims to support children’s health and growth, reduce malnutrition among economically weaker sections, and strengthen household food security. Authorities have also assured that regular quality checks will be conducted to maintain the standard of food items distributed under the scheme.
Targeting around 40 lakh blue card holder families, the programme focuses on households eligible under state welfare schemes, with distribution planned in three-month cycles. Highlighting the broader welfare vision of the state, Bhagwant Mann stated that while Punjab plays a vital role in contributing to India’s food security, it is equally important to ensure nutrition security for its own citizens through expanded social support, improved welfare delivery, and measures that ensure no household lacks basic dietary needs.
