A 475-year-old cathedral in Vasai has gained international recognition for its community-driven restoration efforts. The conservation of the Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in Papdy village received the Award of Merit at the 2025 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, announced in Bangkok. The honour acknowledges the successful revival of a sixteenth-century Portuguese-era structure through traditional building methods and active local participation.

Restoration of a Portuguese-Era Heritage Site

Our Lady of Grace Cathedral reflects the spread of Catholicism in Maharashtra during Portuguese rule. Constructed without cement or bricks, the structure used mud-based techniques typical of the period. Over time, monsoon exposure and unsympathetic repairs weakened several parts of the cathedral, including the roof and bell tower.

The restoration project, undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 crore, addressed structural damage and corrected earlier inappropriate interventions. Work included the repair of the roof, façade, corridors, colonnades, and intricately carved interior liturgical elements, ensuring the building’s architectural authenticity while preserving its function as an active place of worship.

Community-Led Conservation Initiative

The project was led by conservation architect Ainsley Lewis in collaboration with parish members and church authorities. Funding came largely from donations contributed by the local community, highlighting strong public involvement in safeguarding heritage.

In its citation, UNESCO commended the project for its “skilled use of traditional craftsmanship” and for restoring the cathedral as a living religious space. The award jury evaluated 90 entries from 16 countries, selecting winners based on technical excellence, sustainability, and sensitivity to cultural context.
