Bihar is set to get a major boost in air connectivity with the announcement of a new international airport at Sonepur in Saran district. Spread across more than 4,200 acres between Hajipur and Dumaria, the airport will feature a runway over four kilometres long, designed to handle the world’s largest passenger planes, including the Airbus A380. The project is planned to be operational by 2030.

The airport will cater to both passenger travel and cargo transport, aiming to strengthen northern Bihar’s role in trade and tourism. The state has already begun acquiring land, with Rs 1,302 crore earmarked for the first stage of construction. The project has cleared regulatory checks and received preliminary approval from the central government.

Bihar currently has airports in Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia, with new facilities being developed in Bhagalpur and upgrades planned at Darbhanga for international flights.

In the same cabinet meeting, officials approved 35 other initiatives, including a Rs 70 crore fund to repair a flood-hit embankment in Bhagalpur. Once completed, the Sonepur airport is expected to turn northern Bihar into a hub for aviation, business, and tourism by 2030.
