India has taken a major leap toward multilingual digital empowerment with the launch of VoicERA, an open-source Voice AI platform, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), VoicERA is built on the BHASHINI infrastructure, further strengthening India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). The platform is designed to deliver secure, scalable, and multilingual voice services for citizens across sectors, marking the beginning of India’s new “Voice Era.”

Launch of VoicERA by MeitY

The launch was driven by MeitY through the Digital India BHASHINI Division under the Digital India Corporation. The initiative was spearheaded by Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, in collaboration with:

• EkStep Foundation

• International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore

• AI4Bharat

VoicERA is integrated directly into the BHASHINI National Language Infrastructure, creating a robust national platform for multilingual Voice and Language AI.

What is the VoicERA Voice AI Stack?

VoicERA is an open-source, modular, and interoperable Voice AI platform that supports real-time speech systems, conversational AI, and multilingual telephony at scale. Key features include:

• Cloud-deployable and on-premise ready

• Open architecture to prevent vendor lock-in

• Reduced duplication of effort

• Secure and scalable deployment for government applications

It enables government departments and institutions to rapidly build and deploy voice-enabled services without rebuilding entire technology stacks.

Expanding BHASHINI’s Capabilities with VoicERA

BHASHINI has been India’s population-scale language infrastructure, primarily focusing on translation and language technologies. With VoicERA, its capabilities now include:

• Real-time speech recognition

• Conversational AI systems

• Multilingual telephony

• Voice-enabled citizen services

This allows government departments to roll out voice services across domains such as agriculture advisories, education support, grievance redressal, livelihood schemes, and public service discovery.
